Length: 28.3 miles
Time: 2 – 2.5 hours
Aerobic: Moderate (+)
Technical: Intermediate
Season: April through October
Route: From parking areas at Howelsen Ice Arena or Rodeo Grounds off of 5th Street from downtown Steamboat Springs, head south on CR 14 (River Road). After 1.5 miles turn left onto Mount Werner Road to cross over the Yampa River and under Highway 40. The first hill starts by passing one of Steamboat’s historical barns and proceeding up Apres Ski Way to eventually find Laurel Lane. Once you reach the “top of the world” to snap a picture and catch your breath it’s time to head back down to Mount Werner Road. Next in line is an out and back on Burgess Creek Road which reaches the Thunderhead Lift at the Steamboat Ski Resort. After the rolling hills on Steamboat Boulevard surrounding the Rolling Stone Golf Course you’re ready for another climb up Fish Creek Falls road to find one of Steamboat’s main attractions. If you haven’t had enough punishment yet Strawberry Park awaits along County Road (CR) 36 out to the end of the pavement which marks the end of the final climb before descending back to town.
Highlights: This is a good loop with plenty of bailout points if the weather is unsettled or your group wants long and short ride options. It puts together a challenging climbing ride while staying within a short distance of town.
